SSC Junior Engineer (JE) Examination 2025: Key Information

1. Examination Overview and Posts

  • This is an open competitive examination for recruitment to Junior Engineer (JE) posts (Civil, Mechanical & Electrical) in various Government of India Organizations/Offices.
  • The posts are classified as Group ‘B’ (Non-Gazetted), Non-Ministerial.
  • The pay scale is Level-6 (Rs. 35400-112400/-) of the Pay Matrix of the 7th Central Pay Commission.

2. Key Dates for Junior Engineer (JE) Examination, 2025

  • Dates for Submission of Online Application Form: June 30, 2025, to July 21, 2025.
  • Last date and time for receipt of Online Application Form: July 21, 2025 (23:00 hours).
  • Last date and time for making online fee payment: July 22, 2025 (23:00 hours).
  • Window for Online Application Form Correction: August 1, 2025, to August 2, 2025 (23:00 hours).
  • Tentative schedule of Computer Based Examination (Paper-I): October 27-31, 2025.
  • Tentative schedule of Computer Based Examination (Paper-II): January-February, 2026.

3. Vacancies

  • The total tentative vacancies across all organizations for Junior Engineer (Civil, Mechanical & Electrical) Examination, 2025 are 1340.

  • State-wise/Zone-wise vacancies are not collected by the Commission; candidates are advised to contact the concerned User Departments for such information.

5. Essential Educational Qualifications (EQ) for Junior Engineer (Civil) [JE(C)]

  • The crucial date for educational qualifications is January 1, 2026. Results must be declared by this date.
  • For BRO JE(C):
    • Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized University/Institute; OR
    • Three-Year Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized University/Institute/Board AND Two years of working experience in Planning/Execution/Maintenance of Civil Engineering works. (Note: Experience must be acquired after completing the requisite EQ).
  • For Brahmaputra Board, Ministry of Jal Shakti JE(C):
    • Three-Year Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized University or Institution.
  • For Central Water Commission JE(C):
    • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized University or Institution.
  • For CPWD JE(C):
    • Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized University or Institute.
  • For Central Water and Power Research Station JE(C):
    • Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized Institute.
  • For Farakka Barrage Project, Ministry of Jal Shakti JE(C):
    • Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized University or Institute or Board.
  • For MES JE(C):
    • Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized University; OR
    • Three years Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized Institute or University or Board AND Two years’ experience in Planning, Execution and Maintenance of Civil Engineering works.
  • For NTRO JE(C):
    • Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized University/Institution.
  • Important Note on Distance Learning: Engineering programs are generally not permitted under Open and Distance Learning mode, with a specific exception for B. Tech. degree/diploma in Engineering awarded by IGNOU to students enrolled up to academic year 2009-10.

6. Age Limit and Relaxation

  • The crucial date for age reckoning is January 1, 2026.
  • Age Limit for JE(C) Posts:
    • Up to 30 years for Border Roads Organization, Brahmaputra Board, Central Water Commission, Central Water and Power Research Station, Farakka Barrage Project, Military Engineer Services (MES), and National Technical Research Organization (NTRO). (Candidates born not earlier than 02-01-1996 and not later than 01-01-2008).
    • Up to 32 years for Central Public Works Department (CPWD). (Candidates born not earlier than 02-01-1994 and not later than 01-01-2008).
  • Age Relaxation: Permissible for categories like SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years), PwBD (10-15 years), Ex-Servicemen (3 years after deduction of military service), and certain Defence Personnel.

7. Application Process Details

  • Applications must be submitted online only through the Commission's new website https://ssc.gov.in or the ‘mySSC’ mobile application.
  • One-Time Registration (OTR) is mandatory on the new website (old OTRs from ssc.nic.in are not functional).
  • Aadhaar-Based Authentication is optional during OTR. If opted for, photographs and signatures not meeting prescribed standards will not lead to rejection. If not opted, specific documents are required for OTR completion.
  • Live Photograph Capture: The application module is designed to capture a real-time photograph. Do not upload a pre-existing photograph. The photo should be clear, without a cap or spectacles, and with a full frontal view. Applications with inappropriate or pre-existing photos are liable to be rejected (unless Aadhaar authenticated).
  • Scanned Signature: Must be in JPEG format (10-20 KB) with dimensions about 6.0 cm (width) x 2.0 cm (height). Blurred signatures will lead to rejection (unless Aadhaar authenticated).
  • Application Fee: ₹100/-.
  • Fee Exemption: Women, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), and Ex-Servicemen are exempted from paying the fee.
  • Fee Payment Modes: BHIM UPI, Net Banking, Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, or RuPay Debit card.
  • Candidates are strongly advised to submit applications much before the closing date to avoid last-minute technical issues.

8. Application Correction Window

  • A 2-day window (August 1-2, 2025) is provided for correcting/modifying online application parameters.
  • Candidates can resubmit their modified application two times.
  • Correction charges apply: ₹200/- for the first correction and ₹500/- for the second correction, irrespective of gender/category.

9. Examination Scheme (Computer-Based Examination)

  • Two Papers: Paper-I and Paper-II.
  • Paper-I (2 Hours, 200 Marks):
    • General Intelligence and Reasoning (50 questions/50 marks).
    • General Awareness (50 questions/50 marks).
    • General Engineering (Civil & Structural, Electrical, or Mechanical) (100 questions/100 marks).
  • Paper-II (2 Hours, 300 Marks):
    • General Engineering (Civil & Structural, Electrical, or Mechanical) (100 questions/300 marks).
  • Candidates must attempt the General Engineering part (Civil & Structural for JE(C)) corresponding to their educational qualification stream in both Paper-I and Paper-II. Failure to do so will result in rejection of candidature.
  • Negative Marking: 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in Paper-I and one (01) mark for each wrong answer in Paper-II.
  • Tools Allowed on Screen: IS 456:2000 Code of Practice, Steam Table, and a Scientific Calculator will be available on the computer screen during the exam. No physical versions are allowed.
  • Syllabus: The standard for Engineering subjects is approximately at the level of a Diploma in Engineering. Detailed syllabi are provided in the notice for General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and specific Engineering disciplines.

10. Document Verification (DV) and Selection Process

  • DV will be conducted by the User Organizations/Offices after the declaration of the final result.
  • Candidature is initially accepted provisionally. Final selection is subject to verification of all eligibility conditions (EQ, age, caste/category, experience, physical/medical standards) at the time of DV.
  • Candidates must submit photocopies and original documents as specified at the time of DV, including Matriculation/Secondary Certificate, Educational Qualification Certificate, Experience Certificate (if applicable), Caste/Category Certificate, PwBD Certificate, Ex-Servicemen documents, and NOC (if employed in Govt.).
  • Post Preferences: Candidates must submit their preferences for various posts and departments online before the final result. Preferences are final and irreversible. Failure to submit preferences means the candidate will not be considered for any post.
  • Minimum Qualifying Marks: 30% for UR, 25% for OBC/EWS, and 20% for all other categories in both Paper-I and Paper-II.
  • Final selection and allocation of Post/Organization/Office will be based on performance in Paper-I and Paper-II, and the preferences submitted.
  • Border Roads Organization (BRO) Specifics:
    • Only male candidates are eligible for JE posts in BRO.
    • BRO has stringent physical and medical standards, including a mandatory One Mile Run Physical Efficiency Test to be completed within 10 minutes.
    • Candidates applying for BRO must satisfy themselves that they meet these standards. Failure to qualify in these physical and medical standards for a BRO post may result in cancellation of candidature and prevent consideration for any other post/department, even if selected on merit for that BRO post.
  • Selected candidates are liable to serve anywhere in India (All India Service Liability - AISL). They may also be required to acquire proficiency in the local language of the allotted State/UT/Zone.

11. Information for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)

  • Except for BRO, most JE posts are identified as suitable for specific disabilities (e.g., Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Locomotor Disabilities, Specific Learning Disability, Mental Illness).
  • JE posts are not identified as suitable for Visually Handicapped (VH) persons.
  • Scribe Facility: Available for certain PwBD categories, subject to physical limitations in writing and proper certification. Candidates can opt for their own scribe or one provided by the Commission.
  • Compensatory Time: 20 minutes per hour of examination will be provided to eligible PwBD candidates, whether they use a scribe or not.

12. General Instructions and Warnings

  • Candidates must write their name and date of birth strictly as recorded in the Matriculation/Secondary Certificate. Any variation may lead to cancellation of candidature.
  • The Commission's website (https://ssc.gov.in) and regional office websites are the primary sources for updates.
